The Ford Assembly Plant spans 500,000 square feet along Richmond's waterfront, featuring extensive windows that maximize natural light throughout the industrial space.
During World War II, the facility shifted from civilian automobiles to military production, assembling 49,000 jeeps and processing 91,000 tanks and armored vehicles.
Architect Albert Kahn incorporated his signature daylight factory design into the building, creating an industrial structure that influenced future manufacturing facilities.
The Craneway Pavilion section of the building now hosts public events, with parking available at the nearby Visitor Education Center.
The plant served as one of only three tank depots in the United States during World War II, processing military vehicles for the Pacific Theater.
