Sikh Center of San Francisco Bay Area El Sobrante is a hilltop temple featuring multiple golden domes and tiled surfaces in pink, cream, and beige tones. The building complex rises prominently and can be seen from several vantage points across the region.
The center began when local Sikhs acquired hillside land in the mid-1970s and started construction. The first building phase was completed toward the end of the decade.
The center offers daily langar, a traditional communal meal where visitors of all backgrounds share food together while sitting on the floor in fellowship.
Visitors should know that the temple has set opening hours and requires hair to be covered and shoes removed before entering. A northern viewing area requires walking from the parking area to reach it.
A section of the complex features an open deck overlooking the valley and bay waters, and the building is visible from major roadways in the area. This makes it a recognizable landmark from multiple directions.
