Deuel Vocational Institution was a facility in Tracy that received and trained inmates from county jails in northern California. The complex provided different security levels and educational programs for incarcerated individuals.
The facility opened in 1953 and took its name from California state senator Charles H. Deuel, who sponsored the legislation for its creation. It closed in September 2021.
The institution maintained a minimum security ranch with a dairy farm where inmates learned agricultural skills and produced milk for state facilities.
The facility was located in Tracy and combined reception and training areas for inmates. The site is no longer operational and therefore cannot be visited.
The institution processed 2,047 inmates at 121.8% of its intended capacity by April 2020, managing both educational programs and security requirements.
