Stockton Ordnance Depot, Military repair depot in Stockton, California, United States
Stockton Ordnance Depot is a military repair and supply facility in California spanning three separate locations across approximately 800 acres near the Port of Stockton. The installation contains warehouses and maintenance facilities designed to service and store military equipment.
The facility was established in 1941 and became a critical military supply and repair center during World War II supporting the maintenance of vehicles and weapons. It played an important role in the war effort on the West Coast, processing and maintaining large quantities of military equipment.
The facility employed numerous local residents and housed approximately 1,500 German prisoners of war between May 1944 and June 1946.
The facility had multiple transportation connections including rail networks, truck routes, and ship access through the adjacent Port of Stockton. These connections allowed efficient movement of military equipment in and out of the depot during operations.
The term 'jeep' reportedly came from an indexing system used at this depot that applied GP codes for cataloging vehicle parts. This small piece of military history shows how a simple administrative code became the name of an iconic vehicle type.
