Gualala, Coastal community in Mendocino County, United States.
Gualala is a coastal community at the mouth of the Gualala River along California State Route 1, positioned at the boundary between Mendocino and Sonoma counties. The location features beach areas, hills, and green slopes that extend down to the Pacific Ocean.
The settlement emerged in the late 1800s as a lumber port when Heywood's Mill began processing timber at the river mouth. The mill operated for nearly 40 years before ceasing work in 1906, marking the end of the area's early industrial period.
The Gualala Arts Center hosts regular exhibitions, theater performances, and events that showcase work by local artists and regional creators. These cultural gatherings draw people together and reflect how the community values creative expression.
The location is easily accessible via Route 1, with multiple entry points to Gualala Point Regional Park offering beaches, hiking trails, and outdoor recreation areas. Plan extra time for exploring, as the various trails and beaches have different difficulty levels.
The name originates from the Kashaya Pomo village name Walaali, which literally describes where water flows into the ocean. This original meaning still reflects how the area's earliest inhabitants perceived and named the geographical location.
