Palmerton Arboretum, Protected botanical garden in Rogue River, Oregon, United States
Palmerton Arboretum is a protected botanical garden in Rogue River, Oregon, spanning about five acres and containing more than 90 species of trees and shrubs. The collection ranges from Japanese pines and Mediterranean cedars to native trees of the Pacific Northwest.
Orin F. Palmerton established the site in the 1920s as a tree nursery for growing and selling plants. The city of Rogue River purchased the land in 1966 and converted it into a public botanical garden.
The place is named after Orin F. Palmerton, its founder, and today it represents the community's commitment to maintaining green spaces. Walking through it, you notice how local people have created a diverse collection of trees from around the world, showing a deep interest in plant life.
The garden is free to enter and offers restrooms, a playground, and a suspension bridge across Evans Creek for visitors to explore. Visit during dry weather when possible, as the pathways can become slippery after rain.
Among the roughly 40 mature tree species in the garden stands a rare Monkey Puzzle Tree, a South American species with unusual spiky branches. This particular tree is uncommon to encounter in Oregon and often catches visitors' attention as one of the most unusual specimens in the collection.
