Dunsmuir is a city in northern California situated along the Sacramento River and surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense forests. The town rests at about 2,290 feet (700 meters) elevation in a mountainous setting with abundant natural vegetation.
The completion of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1887 led to the settlement being established at this location. The town was named after Alexander Dunsmuir, who donated a fountain to the community.
The downtown area shows buildings from the railroad era that still define the streetscape today. These structures from the early decades of the 20th century reveal how central the railroad was to the community.
The Amtrak train station provides connections to other locations and allows easy arrival in town. Interstate 5 offers direct access to hiking trails and nearby communities throughout the region.
Two waterfalls sit close to the city: Hedge Creek Falls and Mossbrae Falls. A trail at Hedge Creek passes directly behind the cascading water.
