Hedge Creek Falls, Waterfall in Dunsmuir, California, US
Hedge Creek Falls is a waterfall near Dunsmuir that cascades down over dark basalt columns, forming a natural curtain of water. The flow drops into a shallow pool situated right next to the Sacramento River.
The waterfall faced destruction during Interstate 5 construction in the 1960s, but local residents fought successfully to protect it. An expensive highway reroute was built to preserve this natural site from being buried.
The cave behind the waterfall served as a hideout for the outlaw Black Bart before his stage robbery in the Dunsmuir area on October 25, 1879.
Access is from a parking lot near Interstate 5, where a short hiking path leads to the waterfall. Most visitors need less than half an hour to walk there and back.
Visitors can walk through a natural cave formation behind the falling water and see the waterfall from inside. This uncommon perspective makes the experience particularly memorable.
