McKenzie River, Mountain river in western Oregon, United States

The McKenzie River is a mountain waterway that originates in the Cascade Mountains region and flows northward through forested valleys toward Eugene. It travels approximately 90 miles before joining the Willamette River.

The waterway was named after a Scottish-Canadian fur trader who explored the region in the early 1800s while working for the Pacific Fur Company. The river later became important to settlement and trade routes in the valley.

The river has served as a vital waterway for the communities living along its banks for thousands of years, shaping how people lived and traveled through the region. Visitors can observe how the water continues to influence daily life and recreation in the surrounding areas.

The river provides drinking water to nearby cities and offers multiple points where visitors can access it for fishing and paddling. Water conditions and access are best during warmer months when water levels are more stable.

A section of the river disappears underground for several kilometers, flowing through ancient lava tubes beneath the surface before emerging again. This resurgence creates a striking deep blue pool fed entirely by these hidden underground passages.
