Tillamook, County seat in coastal Oregon, US
Tillamook is a small town in northwestern Oregon that serves as the administrative center of a coastal county. The streets run through a river valley, surrounded by forested hills and nearby grazing land.
In 1891 this place was formally declared the seat of county administration. Before that, loggers and settlers had moved into the river valley, drawn by timber and proximity to the coast.
The name comes from the Tillamook people, who lived along this stretch of coast for many generations before European settlement. Visitors today walk past wooden buildings in the town center that recall the early days of frontier life.
Most services and buildings cluster in the small downtown, where everything is within walking range. Rain is common, so a jacket is helpful even in summer months.
The pastures around town are home to many dairy cows, whose milk is processed at local facilities. Some farms open their doors to visitors interested in cheese making and daily farm routines.
