Naval Air Station Tillamook, Naval airship station in Tillamook, United States
Naval Air Station Tillamook was a naval base on the Pacific Coast in the northwest. The facility houses a large aircraft museum with planes, airships, and wartime exhibits displayed indoors.
The Navy built the station in 1942 to operate airships patrolling the Pacific Coast during the Second World War. After the war ended, the base closed but later opened to the public as a museum.
The museum displays artifacts from naval aviation history, including remains from the German airship Hindenburg. Visitors can see how sailors and pilots used equipment and lived during the Second World War.
The large hangar is easy to enter and most exhibits are indoors. Plan to spend several hours walking through the aircraft and displays at a comfortable pace.
The main hangar is one of the largest wooden structures in the world with no interior supports. Its design allows one wide open space that could hold many aircraft during the war.
