Naval Air Station Tillamook, Naval airship station in Tillamook, United States
Naval Air Station Tillamook is a former naval base on the Pacific Coast in the northwestern United States, now open as an aviation museum. It is housed inside a massive wooden hangar and displays aircraft, airships, and wartime exhibits all under one roof.
The Navy built the station in 1942 to launch airships that patrolled the Pacific Coast during the Second World War. After the war ended, the base was closed and later opened to the public as a museum.
The museum holds parts from the German airship Hindenburg, which visitors can see up close. The displays show how naval pilots and crews worked and lived during the Second World War.
The hangar is easy to find and most exhibits are indoors, so weather is not a concern. A visit usually takes several hours because the floor space is very large.
The main hangar has no interior supports at all, leaving a completely open floor roughly the size of several football fields. This was necessary to fit multiple airships inside at the same time without columns blocking their path.
