Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge on rocky islands near Oceanside, Oregon.
Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge comprises three prominent rock formations and several smaller islands located roughly half a mile from the Oregon coast. The islands create a protected area with natural habitats for seabirds and marine mammals.
President Theodore Roosevelt established this as a National Wildlife Refuge in 1907, marking the first protected refuge west of the Mississippi River. This early conservation effort came about through the work of naturalists concerned about protecting seabirds and marine life.
The place gets its name from the three distinctive rock formations visible from the shore, which serve as a recognizable landmark for the local community. Local people and visitors immediately identify these shapes as part of the region's coastal character.
The islands are viewable from the water, but visitors must maintain a safe distance and avoid landing on them. Bring binoculars for better viewing and visit early in the day when light conditions are good and wildlife is most active.
The islands support a massive population of tufted puffins, among the largest of their kind in the entire state. These charismatic birds are easy to spot even for beginning birdwatchers, with their colorful beaks and distinctive waddling gait.
