St. Helens Court, Mediterranean Revival residence hall at Portland State University, United States
St. Helens Court is a five-story residential building on the Portland State University campus with red brick walls and Spanish-inspired decorative details across its facade. It provides 36 studio apartments and 15 one-bedroom units for student housing.
Real estate developer Harry Mittleman built the structure in 1927 as a luxury apartment complex. Portland State University purchased the property in 1969 and has operated it as student housing since then.
The building displays design elements reminiscent of Southern European coastal towns, reflecting academic tastes during the 1920s. This architectural style was especially popular among educated circles at that time.
The building sits centrally on campus and is easily accessible on foot from other academic buildings and facilities. Keep in mind this is an active residential building, so respect for residents is important when visiting.
The building's name honors Helen Mittleman, the wife of its developer, whom he deeply respected. This personal tribute remains woven into the building's identity today.
