Slocum House, Victorian mansion in Vancouver, United States
The Slocum House is a mansion with Italian-style architectural features located at the southwest corner of Esther Short Park in Vancouver. The building displays decorative window frames, ornamental details, and distinctive tall proportions with bay windows.
The building was constructed in 1867 by Charles W. Slocum, a craftsman from Rhode Island who brought his skills to the region. It became an important example of early residential architecture in Washington Territory.
The house shows how wealthy families lived in the Pacific Northwest during the 1800s, with its tall rooms and detailed interiors reflecting their social standing. Walking through it gives a sense of domestic life from that era.
The house stands near downtown Vancouver and can be viewed from the outside, with the best views from the park side. The nearby pathways around the park are freely accessible and offer a good vantage point of the building.
The building narrowly escaped demolition in 1965 thanks to community efforts that led to its relocation one block away. This rescue operation was one of the region's early successes in historic preservation.
