Vancouver National Historic Reserve Historic District

Vancouver National Historic Reserve Historic District, Historical district in Vancouver, Washington, US

Vancouver National Historic Reserve is a large protected area that combines several significant sites including Fort Vancouver, Officers Row, Vancouver Barracks, and Pearson Air Museum. The grounds feature reconstructed structures, museum buildings, and exhibition spaces that document different historical periods.

The site began as a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post in 1824, which controlled commerce and operations across the Pacific coast region. After the fur trade declined, the United States Army took over the location and developed it into a major military installation.

The district reflects the importance of trade, military presence, and aviation development in shaping the region, which visitors can experience through reconstructed buildings, exhibits, and living history demonstrations. These layers show how different periods influenced daily life and community growth in the area.

The grounds are open to visitors daily and located conveniently along Anderson Street in Vancouver, easily reached from surrounding roads. The area has wide, clearly marked pathways between the different museums and exhibits, making it pleasant to explore on foot.

The grounds contain nine archaeological sites revealing foundations and artifacts from different settlement periods, some dating back to the 1840s. These buried remains tell the story of people who lived here in ways that surface buildings alone cannot show.
