Swan Island, River island in Portland, United States
Swan Island is a river island spanning approximately 900 acres along the Willamette River, home to industrial parks, shipping terminals, and manufacturing operations. The site functions as a major port and logistics hub supporting regional commerce and transportation.
The site was acquired by the Port of Portland in 1921 and initially developed as an airfield before becoming a major shipbuilding center during World War II. The facilities later evolved into one of the region's key industrial and maritime production hubs.
The island maintains strong ties to Portland's shipyard heritage, with its facilities reflecting how industrial work once shaped the city's identity and economic life.
The island connects to the mainland via bridge and contains numerous facilities accessible through private access roads. Much of the site is privately owned industrial property not open to the general public.
The island's size tripled through land reclamation projects that incorporated dredged material from river channel improvements. This geological transformation enabled the site to accommodate the large-scale operations it hosts today.
