Springdale School, school in Multnomah County, Oregon
Springdale School is a school building in Multnomah County, Oregon, that has stood since 1931 with plain brick walls and tall windows. The structure displays clear geometric lines in the Art Deco style, featuring a flat roof with decorative parapets and terracotta trim on its exterior.
The building was designed in 1931 by Portland architect Claud Freeman in the Art Deco style to serve the growing population after earlier schools had become too small. It functioned as the educational and social center of the community for generations of students until its closure in 1996.
The school is a gathering place for the community beyond its role as a classroom building. Children arrive each morning with their backpacks, and teachers work with families to support them. The grounds host local events and celebrations that bring neighbors together throughout the year.
The school building remains active today, housing an arts program with students through eighth grade. Visitors can access the grounds and view the building, particularly during local events and community gatherings when the space is open to the public.
After years of decline, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 and subsequently received state and federal funding for restoration. The work preserved its original character with hardwood floors and period fixtures while adding modern safety upgrades including seismic reinforcement.
