Blue Glacier

Blue Glacier, Glacier in Olympic National Park, Washington, United States.

Blue Glacier is a vast ice field situated at the head of the Hoh River valley, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. The formation spans a considerable area and consists of compacted snow and ice that has accumulated over many centuries.

The ice field has retreated steadily over the past 2 centuries, reflecting changing climate conditions in the region. Early surveys documented greater expanse, while recent observations confirm ongoing contraction of its size.

The glacier sits within protected wilderness and feeds streams that sustain local wildlife and plant communities. Visitors can observe how meltwater shapes the land and nourishes the river ecosystems throughout the year.

Access is via a lengthy hiking trail through forest and river valley with steep terrain near the glacier. Visitors should bring proper equipment and prepare for changing weather conditions throughout the hike.

This ice field receives more precipitation than nearly any other in the lower 48 states due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Its position on the western side of the mountain range makes it one of the snowiest places in the country.
