Mount Mystery

Mount Mystery is a summit in the Olympic Mountains that rises to about 7,600 feet and features steep rock faces and ridges. A smaller glacier sits on the eastern side, creating a landscape of stone and ice.

A Forest Service worker named G.A. Whitehead named the mountain in 1915 after spotting it through thick fog. The name reflects the mysterious appearance it had at the moment of discovery.

Indigenous peoples of the region used the surrounding mountain passes and valleys for hunting and travel long before modern trail systems were built.

The climb requires advanced skills and solid equipment since the mountain is remote and weather can change quickly. Visitors should start early and be prepared for conditions to shift during the day.

The mountain is the sixth-highest peak in its range, and it has a companion peak nearby that hikers often encounter as part of the same climb. The two-peak formation is something climbers learn to recognize.
