Mount Deception, Mountain peak in Olympic National Park, United States
Mount Deception is a 7,788-foot (2,374-meter) peak in the Olympic Mountains and the second-highest summit in the range. It features steep slopes and two small glaciers on its northern face.
The Seattle Press Expedition first named the peak Mount Holmes before the U.S. Forest Service renamed it Mount Deception because of navigation challenges in the area.
The mountain serves as a training destination for climbers seeking to practice advanced techniques and gain experience with alpine climbing in a challenging setting.
The mountain is accessed via the Upper Dungeness Trail, with a round trip of about 21 miles requiring crampons, ice axes, and a helmet. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and technical alpine terrain.
The mountain sits in a rain shadow zone and receives significantly less precipitation than peaks on the western side of the Olympic range.
