ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park, Nature reserve in Coquitlam, Canada
ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park is a nature reserve covering roughly 260 hectares with forests, wetlands, and open grasslands along the Coquitlam River. The landscape supports diverse wildlife through its varied habitats and is networked by multiple walking trails.
The land began as a productive farm in the early 1900s before eventually being protected as a regional park. The park received its current name, ƛ̓éxətəm, in July 2023.
The name ƛ̓éxətəm comes from hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, the language of the Kwikwetlem First Nation, and means 'to be invited'. The choice reflects the community's values around welcoming others onto their ancestral lands.
The park has multiple walking trails with varying difficulty levels and viewing spots for observing wildlife. Clear signage and marked paths make it easy to navigate and enjoy designated picnic areas.
The park spans across both Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, creating continuous habitat for uncommon species. Visitors can spot birds like the American Bittern here, which are difficult to find elsewhere in the region.
