Whitehorse Mountain

Whitehorse Mountain is a summit in the North Cascades that features a steep north-facing wall. The peak rises dramatically from its base and requires different climbing techniques across its varied terrain.

The summit received its first documented ascent in 1909 when a climber established a route across the Northwest Shoulder. This path became the standard way that others would approach the peak.

The Lushootseed people called this summit čubaliali, and their stories connect it to a conflict between two mountains. Local traditions give the place meaning that goes beyond its geography.

Visitors should expect snow and prepare for multiple climbing styles since the ascent includes steep and varied passages. Good weather is essential since conditions can shift quickly.

The peak got its English name from an unexpected detail: in 1894 a local postmaster spotted a snow patch that resembled a white horse. This chance resemblance stuck as the official name.
