Whitehorse Mountain, Mountain summit in North Cascades, Washington, United States.

Whitehorse Mountain is a summit in the North Cascades of Washington state, known for its steep north-facing wall that drops sharply from the top. The peak rises quickly from the surrounding terrain, with different routes offering very different conditions on each side.

The first recorded ascent of the peak took place in 1909, when a climber opened a route via the Northwest Shoulder. That route became the standard approach for those who followed.

The Lushootseed people called this summit čubaliali, and their stories connect it to a conflict between two mountains. Local traditions give the place meaning that goes beyond its geography.

Anyone heading to the summit should be ready for snow and shifting conditions, as the terrain demands different skills depending on the chosen route. Good weather is important since conditions can change quickly and without much warning.

The name comes from a chance observation made in 1894, when a local postmaster noticed a patch of snow on the slope that looked like a white horse. That casual remark turned into the permanent official name of the peak.
