Hozomeen Mountain, Double summit mountain in North Cascades, Washington, United States.
Hozomeen Mountain is a summit in the North Cascades with two peaks connected by a ridge, with steep cliffs facing north and south. The mountain rises approximately 8,070 feet and displays the sharp profile that defines its appearance from most viewpoints.
The mountain was first climbed in 1904 when Sledge Tatum and George Loudon reached the North Peak as part of an expedition. This early ascent marked the beginning of mountaineering interest in this region of the Cascades.
The name Hozomeen comes from the Salish language and means sharp like a knife, referring to how indigenous peoples saw the mountain's distinctive profile. This name shows how the landscape's shape was understood and described by those who lived here first.
Reaching the summit requires using the Skyline II Trail, a challenging hiking route that crosses rough terrain over many miles. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and bring appropriate mountaineering gear and experience.
The mountain contains deposits of Hozomeen chert, a stone material that indigenous peoples used to make tools. These mineral resources made the location valuable for hunting and crafting activities long before European settlement.
