Pahrump, Desert community in Nye County, Nevada
Pahrump is a desert settlement in Nye County, Nevada, spreading across a valley floor at roughly 2700 feet (822 meters) elevation. Residential neighborhoods sit between barren hills and flat plains, while commercial strips follow the main roadways.
Settlers arrived in the late 1800s after artesian wells provided water for ranching and farming operations. The community grew significantly from the 1970s onward, when land parcels opened for residential development.
Locals pronounce the name as puh-RUMP, a shortened version of the original Southern Paiute phrase that once described the springs in the area. Today the town functions as a residential alternative to urban centers, with many residents working remotely or commuting to nearby employment hubs.
Access follows State Route 160, which runs westward from Las Vegas and connects directly to the valley floor. Visitors exploring the area should bring water and sun protection, as desert conditions bring temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in summer.
The Spring Mountain Motor Sports Ranch complex offers multiple track configurations for driver training and racing events. Visitors sometimes spot high-performance vehicles practicing at the facility outside town between the mountain ranges.
