Grizzly Giant, Giant sequoia tree in Mariposa Grove, US.
Grizzly Giant is a giant sequoia in Mariposa County, United States, distinguished by its exceptional height of about 64 meters (210 feet) and its enormous trunk diameter of roughly 7.8 meters (26 feet) at the base. The tree rises within a dense grove of ancient sequoias and draws attention through its sheer size and great age.
The tree began growing nearly 3,000 years ago and has experienced fires, lightning strikes, and storms that left scars on its bark. Photographers documented it from the 1860s onward, which increased its recognition beyond the region.
The name of this tree reflects its massive appearance, which reminded early visitors of the size of a grizzly bear. Hikers often pause for a long time to take in the rough, reddish-brown bark and the enormous branches that spread far above the forest floor.
A short hiking trail runs through the grove and brings visitors directly to the base of the tree, where its dimensions become clearly noticeable. The path is mostly level and manageable for most hikers, though steps and wooden walkways can become slippery.
One of the lower branches towers above many of the surrounding trees and reaches a length of around 29 meters (95 feet) with a diameter of more than 1.8 meters (6 feet). This branch alone could qualify as a respectable tree and shows the extraordinary growth power of the sequoia.
