Mount Goddard, Mountain summit in Kings Canyon National Park, United States.
Mount Goddard is a mountain summit in the Sierra Nevada that marks the southwest edge of Evolution Basin. The peak rises to about 13,564 feet and stands out with steep rocky faces and sparse vegetation at higher elevations.
Surveyors from the California Geological Survey explored the peak in the 1860s and made several attempts to reach it. These repeated efforts eventually led to complete mapping of the surrounding region.
The mountain bears the name of George Henry Goddard, a civil engineer who conducted extensive surveys of the Sierra Nevada in the 1850s.
The climb follows rocky routes that require good footing and take several hours to complete. Visitors should bring high-altitude gear and start early to return safely before dark.
The north face of the peak holds small glaciers that reflect the harsh alpine environment. These patches of ice are rare remnants from earlier periods and shape how the steep north side looks.
