Thunderbolt Peak, Mountain summit in Sierra Nevada, California, United States.

Thunderbolt Peak is a mountain summit in the Sierra Nevada of California that reaches 14,009 feet in elevation. It stands as the northernmost fourteener in this major mountain range and sits directly adjacent to North Palisade.

The peak was first reached in 1931 by a climbing expedition led by Robert Underhill and Norman Clyde. This early ascent marked an important moment in the exploration of the high summits in this region.

The mountain received its name after a lightning bolt struck near climber Jules Eichorn during the initial ascent expedition.

The main climbing route requires technical climbing skills and passes through challenging rock sections, particularly a difficult block near the summit. Visitors should be experienced climbers prepared for exposed terrain.

The peak earned its name from a lightning strike during an early climbing expedition when the bolt narrowly missed climber Jules Eichorn. This dramatic incident during the ascent gave the mountain its striking name.
