Split Mountain, Mountain summit in Sierra Nevada, California, United States.
Split Mountain is a high peak in the Sierra Nevada located between Fresno and Inyo Counties, reaching 14,064 feet (4,286 m) in elevation. The peak features two distinct summits running along a north-south line of the Sierra Crest.
Frank Salque and his climbing party made the first recorded ascent of this summit in 1887. The artist Bolton Brown later named it, reflecting the mountain's two distinct peaks.
The mountain holds a position on both the Sierra Peaks Section Peaks List and Vagmarken Club Sierra Crest List, drawing mountaineers throughout the year.
Climbers can reach the summit through several different routes, including the John Muir Trail or the Red Lake trailhead. The north side offers more accessible climbing conditions for those with moderate experience.
The eastern face of this peak displays a two-toned coloration created by the mix of granodiorite and leucogranite rocks. This natural geological pattern makes it notably distinctive to hikers observing the mountain from different angles.
