Happy Isles

Happy Isles is a pair of islands situated in the Merced River at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley, surrounded by granite boulders and flowing water. The islands sit within easy walking distance from the valley floor and provide close views of the surrounding rock formations.

A major rockfall in 1996 significantly altered the landscape near this location, leaving visible marks across the valley. The event prompted the installation of educational signs explaining how geological forces shape the area.

The Art and Nature Center offers exhibits about local plants and animals with educational programs running from April through October. Visitors can learn about the natural world that surrounds the valley floor.

The walk to the islands is short, paved, and wheelchair accessible for visitors of all abilities. Facilities including restrooms and parking are located near the visitor center at the trailhead.

At this location, the Merced River transitions from a steep gradient upstream to a gentler slope, creating noticeably different water patterns. This geological shift happens relatively quickly, making the area a natural demonstration of how rivers shape valleys.
