Humboldt Cave, Archaeological cave in Churchill County, Nevada, United States.
Humboldt Cave is an archaeological site in Churchill County, Nevada, situated in a limestone cliff overlooking Humboldt Sink. The entrance is modest, standing roughly 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, with the interior extending about 49 feet back into the rock.
Archaeological excavations in the 1930s revealed caches containing preserved artifacts dating back roughly 2000 years. Radiocarbon analysis confirmed the age of materials and demonstrated long-term human activity at this location.
The site holds woven garments, baskets, and textiles that reflect the way indigenous peoples from surrounding regions used and valued such crafted items.
The location sits on an elevated plateau and requires permits for access to protect the site. Visitors should expect an exposed terrain with rough, rocky ground and limited shade.
Pack rats unintentionally shaped the archaeological record by gathering and hoarding diverse materials in one chamber of the cave. Their behavior preserved otherwise fragile organic objects that archaeologists later recovered and studied.
