High Rock Lake Wilderness

High Rock Lake Wilderness is a protected area in the Black Rock Desert with extensive sagebrush and saltbrush landscapes. The region features varied terrain across different elevations with canyons and open spaces throughout.

The area was shaped around 11,800 years ago when a major rockslide blocked the outlet between two canyons. This geological event created conditions that still define the landscape today.

Native American tribes utilized the natural resources within the High Rock Lake region for sustenance, shelter, and traditional medicinal practices throughout generations.

This location requires good preparation: bring plenty of water, food, and navigation tools since it is far from any facilities. The best time to explore is spring or fall when temperatures are milder.

In Fly Canyon, thousands of years of water movement created distinctive round rock bowls that look like carved vessels. These potholes show powerfully how water and sand can shape stone over extended time.
