Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, National wildlife refuge in Lake County, Nevada and Oregon, US.
The 573,504-acre refuge features volcanic terrain with elevations from 4,100 to 7,200 feet, containing sagebrush steppe ecosystems in the Great Basin.
The refuge originated in 1931 when the Audubon Society and Boone & Crockett Club acquired 34,000 acres of Last Chance Ranch for antelope protection.
Northern Paiute, Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla peoples inhabited this region seasonally before European contact in the 1820s.
The refuge requires visitors to bring supplies as the nearest gas stations and food stores are located more than 100 miles from the protected area.
The Virgin Valley Opal Mining District within the refuge maintains mineral rights for gemstone extraction, including black opals and petrified wood.
