Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, National wildlife refuge in Lake County, Oregon.
The refuge extends across 278,000 acres of high desert terrain with steep cliffs, rolling hills, and sagebrush grasslands at elevations between 4,470 and 8,017 feet.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt established this refuge in December 1936 to protect the remaining pronghorn antelope populations in southeastern Oregon.
The refuge serves as an educational center for high desert ecosystems, offering opportunities to study native wildlife species and their natural habitats.
Visitors need sturdy vehicles to navigate unpaved roads, with the nearest fuel and supplies located 25 miles west in Plush, Oregon.
The refuge contains natural hot springs at Warner Peak's eastern base and maintains a complete prohibition on domestic livestock to protect native species.
