Cosmiques Hut, building
The Cosmiques Hut is a mountain shelter in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc located above 3600 meters on a rocky ridge between Aiguille du Midi and Mont-Blanc. The building accommodates about 130 people in simple rooms and offers a dining area and basic facilities for climbers and hikers.
The hut was built in the early 1900s as a base for climbers aiming for higher peaks. It has since become a key stopping point on routes to Mont-Blanc and neighboring peaks, with several expansions and improvements over the decades.
The hut's name comes from its location on the Cosmiques ridge between Aiguille du Midi and Mont-Blanc, where climbers from around the world gather. It has become a social hub where mountaineers exchange stories and share their passion for high-altitude mountaineering.
The hut is open from late February through the end of September and is best reached by cable car to Aiguille du Midi followed by a trek along the ridge. Dress warmly and watch the weather, as conditions at this altitude change quickly, and booking ahead is wise during peak season.
The approach to the hut crosses a narrow ridge with ropes for safety, an unforgettable experience before even arriving at the shelter. Many guests remember the sunrises most vividly, when golden light paints the snow-covered peaks and glaciers surrounding the hut.
