City Creek Center, Mixed-use development in Downtown Salt Lake City, United States
City Creek Center is a mixed-use complex in downtown Salt Lake City that combines retail spaces, office buildings, and residential units on a large site. A simulated stream runs through the shopping areas, creating a green presence within the commercial buildings.
The site was created through demolition of two earlier shopping centers, ZCMI Center Mall and Crossroads Plaza, which prompted a major urban redevelopment project. Demolition work began in 2006 and made way for this new mixed-use development on the same location.
The complex honors the area's past through a recreated stream that references the original City Creek, which once provided water to early Salt Lake settlers. Visitors can see this reconstructed waterway as they walk through the shopping areas.
The complex is easily accessible from downtown and laid out well for walking, with wide paths connecting the different areas. It can be visited year-round, though winter months are cold and the retractable roof closes during cloudy or snowy weather.
The shopping center features a retractable glass roof that opens and closes depending on weather, offering visitors changing light conditions throughout the day. An impressive steel pedestrian bridge spans the site and weighs hundreds of tons, forming a striking part of the architecture.
