Alfred McCune Home, Historic house on Capitol Hill, Salt Lake City, US.
The Alfred McCune Home is a historic mansion with Gothic revival architecture located on Capitol Hill in Salt Lake City. The building features 21 rooms with elaborate imported materials including mahogany and decorative roof tiles sourced from overseas.
The mansion was built in 1901 for railroad magnate Alfred McCune after architect S.C. Dallas spent two years studying building styles across America and Europe. The family later donated the structure to the LDS Church, which led to its conversion for a different purpose.
The residence served as a private home for a wealthy family and later became a music school that operated for many years. Visitors can observe how the spaces were adapted for teaching while retaining their original grandeur.
The mansion is located at the northeast corner of 200 North Main Street and is listed as a historic site. Visitors should plan to spend time exploring the architecture and interiors, as the building has many rooms to discover throughout the visit.
The building was severely damaged by a tornado in 1999 and required major restoration work to recover. The reconstruction was so thorough that the structure regained its complete historic appearance afterward.
