Multani Caravanserai

The Multani Caravanserai is a lodging building with a square layout in Baku's old city, where rooms are arranged around a central courtyard. A well in the courtyard provided water to travelers, and the building now operates as a restaurant serving Azerbaijani food.

Built in the 14th century, it provided lodging for merchants traveling from Multan in present-day Pakistan along trade routes. The structure marks an important point in Baku's history as a center for exchange between East and West.

The building shows a blend of Persian, Arab, and Azerbaijani design elements that you can still observe today. Merchants from different regions gathered here to exchange goods, ideas, and knowledge while crossing trade routes.

The building stands across from the Bukhara Caravanserai, making it easy to locate when exploring the old city. The restaurant inside provides a good sense of how such places historically served travelers and merchants.

Archaeological work revealed that the caravanserai was built on top of earlier structures, uncovering multiple layers of settlement. This discovery shows how important this location remained for Baku across many centuries.
