Hogup Cave, Archaeological cave in Box Elder County, United States.
Hogup Cave is a two-chambered limestone cavern located on the southwestern slope of Hogup Mountain, extending into the Great Salt Lake Desert landscape. The site contains multiple distinct layers of accumulated materials that reveal how people occupied this space across different time periods.
Human occupation at this location began in ancient times and continued for more than 8000 years. Researchers identified 16 distinct layers of deposits that document periods of settlement and abandonment throughout the span.
The cave reveals how different groups lived in the space across many centuries, each leaving behind tools and objects that reflected their own way of life. Visitors can observe how people adapted to the harsh desert surroundings by using what was available to them.
Access to this site is restricted for protection and research purposes, so visitors cannot enter freely without authorization. The nearest town where supplies and information are available is Park Valley, located in the surrounding region.
The cave preserved thousands of textile fragments, grinding stones, and cooking features that show how people managed daily tasks over many centuries. These objects offer a rare look into the practical details of how inhabitants actually lived and worked.
