Weatherford Hotel, United States historic place in Flagstaff, Arizona
The Weatherford Hotel is a historic hotel in downtown Flagstaff, Arizona, housed in a red sandstone and brick building on North Leroux Street. The multi-story structure contains guest rooms on the upper floors along with bars and event spaces on the lower levels.
John Weatherford, a Texan who came west looking for opportunity, opened the hotel in 1900 and chose stone construction after fires had destroyed earlier wooden buildings in town. Over the following decades the building was expanded and changed hands several times, eventually being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The hotel carries the name of its founder and today houses three bars that locals and travelers visit throughout the day and evening. The ground floor spaces retain their old wood floors and period furnishings, giving the rooms a feel that connects to the early years of the building.
The hotel sits in the center of Flagstaff's downtown, within walking distance of shops, cafes, and the train station. The building has its original stairs and no elevator, so guests who have difficulty with steps should keep that in mind before booking.
Every New Year's Eve, a large pinecone is dropped from the hotel's balcony to mark midnight, a local tradition that draws crowds to the street below. The choice of a pinecone instead of a ball is a nod to the pine forests that surround Flagstaff on all sides.
