Casa Rinconada, Archaeological site in San Juan County, US

Casa Rinconada is an isolated great kiva on a ridge across from Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Culture National Historical Park. It is 64 feet (20 m) in diameter, the largest excavated great kiva in Chaco Canyon, with a masonry firebox, an inner bench, four large seating pits for roof supports, masonry vaults, and 34 niches in two sizes around the wall. A 39-foot (12 m) underground passage was cut into the sandstone and shale of the ridge.

The structure was built between 900 and 1150 CE during the height of the Chaco civilization. It represents a time when this region served as a major hub for the Ancestral Puebloan peoples.

Casa Rinconada lies apart from the pueblos, on a ridge across from Pueblo Bonito, and its 39-foot passage was cut through the sandstone and shale of that ridge. The passage may have let performers enter the kiva suddenly, surprising those assembled inside.

The site is reached by a half-mile trail from Canyon Loop Drive within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Bring water and sun protection for the walk, as the terrain is open and exposed.

Casa Rinconada has a 39-foot (12 m) underground passage dug out of the sandstone and shale of the ridge, perhaps used so performers could enter ceremonies suddenly and surprise the audience. The kiva also holds 34 niches in two sizes around its wall.
