Casa Rinconada, Archaeological site in San Juan County, US
Casa Rinconada is a circular kiva measuring about 64 feet across with 34 wall niches, a masonry firebox, and an inner bench running along the walls. The underground structure served as a central gathering space for the pueblos in this settlement.
The structure was built between 900 and 1150 CE during the height of the Chaco civilization. It represents a time when this region served as a major hub for the Ancestral Puebloan peoples.
The underground passage allows ceremony participants to enter suddenly through the structure during community gatherings, showing how the design served ritual purposes. This architectural choice reflects the importance of timing and presentation in ceremonial life.
The site is reached by a half-mile trail from Canyon Loop Drive within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Bring water and sun protection for the walk, as the terrain is open and exposed.
The kiva incorporates architectural alignments with celestial events, revealing advanced astronomical knowledge of its builders. These alignments allowed sunlight and shadows to interact with the structure in specific ways during different seasons.
