Samedan, Administrative center in Maloja Region, Switzerland
Samedan is a municipality in the Upper Engadin valley at roughly 1720 meters elevation, surrounded by alpine meadows, forests, and mountain slopes. It serves as an important administrative and transportation hub for the region with an airport and railway connections.
The settlement was founded between 1137 and 1139 and developed into a regional administrative center by 1462. It converted to Protestantism in 1551.
The municipality maintains three official languages, with German representing 61.5 percent, Romansh 16.7 percent, and Italian 14.9 percent of the population.
The place is easily reached via Engadin Airport and the railway station, which simplifies exploring the Upper Engadin landscape. The local transport network enables straightforward connections to nearby villages and destinations.
The Fundaziun de Planta library and the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart are notable heritage sites that preserve the cultural memory of the place. Both buildings reflect the history and religious traditions of the community.
