La Spedla, Mountain summit in Grisons, Switzerland and Italy
La Spedla is a mountain summit on the border between Switzerland and Italy, in the canton of Grisons, and belongs to the Bernina Range. It stands at around 4,020 meters and features three distinct ridges that drop off in different directions.
The peak takes its name from Giuseppe Perrucchetti, an Italian general and senator of the 19th century who had a close interest in the Alpine border region. His involvement in both military affairs and mountain exploration gave his name to several features in this area.
La Spedla sits directly on the border between Switzerland and Italy, which means a climber can step from one country to the other at the very top. This boundary position makes the summit a meeting point for mountaineers from both sides of the Alps.
The summit is only reachable via alpine routes and requires experience in high mountain terrain along with proper equipment. The Rifugio Marco e Rosa on the Italian side is the closest support point and a good base for the ascent.
The southwestern ridge of the summit drops down to the Breccia dello Scerscen at around 3,870 meters (12,700 feet) and is the least traveled of the three ridges. Climbers who take this route pass through terrain that most visitors to the area never see.
