Kloster Oetenbach, Dominican nunnery in Zürich, Switzerland
Kloster Oetenbach was a Dominican nunnery in Zürich with buildings dedicated to religious activities, dormitories, and a chapel honoring the Virgin Mary. The complex sat near Sihlbühl and functioned as a major religious center for the city.
The nunnery was founded in 1237 along the Oetenbach stream and relocated to Oetenbachgasse in 1286 with support from Elisabeth von Rapperswil and local nobility. After the Reformation in 1525, it lost its religious purpose and was converted to secular uses.
The nunnery was a place where Dominican women lived together in religious community and prayer. They created manuscripts here and shaped a spiritual center that mattered to Zürich.
The former monastery site is located in central Zürich and is easily accessible by road. The grounds are not regularly open to visitors, but the neighborhood offers many other historical and cultural sites within walking distance.
The last surviving building, the Waisenhaus, now serves as headquarters for the Zürich City Police Department. This unexpected use connects the site's long history with modern urban administration.
