Cerro Grande rises to an elevation of 10,199 feet, featuring a mixed conifer forest trail that extends 4.6 miles round trip from the trailhead.
The mountain stands as part of the Los Alamos Volcanic Field, formed over a million years ago through volcanic activity that shaped the Jemez Mountains.
The surrounding area contains archaeological evidence of ancient human settlements, with numerous Native American artifacts discovered throughout the Bandelier National Monument region.
Hikers need to bring sufficient water supplies and appropriate gear, as the trail gains 1,200 feet in elevation without access to water sources.
The summit provides views spanning from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the San Mateo Mountains, with the Rio Grande Valley stretching between them.
