Drop City, Intentional community in Las Animas County, Colorado, USA.
Drop City was an intentional community in Colorado composed of geometric dome structures built from recycled materials like automobile roofs and metal sheets. The structures sat near Trinidad and drew salvaged materials from local junkyards.
The community was founded in 1965 by Gene Bernofsky, JoAnn Bernofsky, Richard Kallweit, and Clark Richert on seven acres of land. It emerged during a period of countercultural movements and experimental living in America.
The community organized itself around artistic expression and creative collaboration, with residents living and working together on shared projects. Music, film, and visual art shaped the daily life and identity of the place.
The site requires patience to explore since structures are spread across the land and some distances can be significant. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes and visit during daylight hours.
Buckminster Fuller, a renowned designer and architect, visited the community and gave it his Dymaxion award in 1966 for creatively adapting his geodesic dome concepts. This was rare recognition from outside for an experimental building project.
