Y Mountain, Mountain summit in Provo, US
Y Mountain is a summit in Provo featuring a hiking trail that covers roughly 2.6 miles round trip while gaining about 1,100 feet in elevation. The route passes through Wasatch Range terrain and leads to a large white concrete letter carved into the mountainside.
The large concrete Y was built in 1906 by Brigham Young University students and measures about 380 feet tall and 130 feet wide. This construction project was intended to mark the university's presence on the landscape and has remained a regional landmark ever since.
The glowing Y is illuminated annually by Brigham Young University to mark graduation celebrations and university milestones. This light display has become a visible symbol of the school's connection to the surrounding landscape and community.
The trail is best hiked during dry weather, but bring plenty of water since there are no natural sources along the route. Some sections are steep and require decent physical fitness and sturdy footwear for safe footing.
Paragliders launch from the summit to soar above Utah Valley, taking advantage of the wind conditions and altitude to glide over the surrounding landscape. This sport draws enthusiasts who come specifically to experience the exceptional flying conditions this location offers.
