Vega State Park, State park with mountain reservoir in Collbran, US
Vega State Park is a Colorado state park in the western part of the state, centered around a large reservoir sitting at roughly 8,000 feet (2,400 m) above sea level. Open mountain meadows and forested slopes surround the water on most sides, giving the park its open, high-country feel.
The park opened in 1967, built around a reservoir that had been created to supply water for farming in the Grand Valley. What started as an agricultural water project gradually became a recreation area serving the surrounding region.
The park draws visitors throughout the year who boat, fish, and cross-country ski in winter months. These activities shape how the community uses and values this mountain reservoir.
The park has several campgrounds and a handful of rental cabins for those who want to stay overnight. Picnic areas and restrooms are spread across the grounds, making a day visit straightforward at any time of year.
The lake is actively stocked with rainbow trout, making it one of the few fishable lakes at this elevation in Colorado. Anglers visit year-round, including in winter when ice fishing is possible on the frozen surface.
