Mosquito Range, Mountain range in central Colorado, US
Mosquito Range is a mountain range in central Colorado that extends between Summit County and Lake County. The range contains numerous peaks that rise above 14,000 feet, creating a prominent ridge across the landscape.
The range formed during a major mountain-building period roughly 65 million years ago. Later geological changes separated it from neighboring mountain ranges through crustal movements around 35 million years ago.
The area contains multiple mining towns including Fairplay, Alma, and Leadville, which developed during the Colorado mining era of the 1850s.
The peaks are accessible by well-established hiking trails from multiple starting points across the region. Visit during the warmer months, as conditions at higher elevations become significantly harsher once weather patterns change.
The range acts as a natural dividing line for river systems and water sources that flow in opposite directions. This division shapes water flow across large portions of the state and creates distinct drainage patterns on each side.
