Black Forest School, Historic school building in El Paso County, United States
Black Forest School is a small schoolhouse in El Paso County, built between 1920 and 1921 and now recognized as a historic property. The building measures approximately 32 by 22 feet and was constructed from Ponderosa logs with a red brick chimney and wooden floor.
Local residents built the school in 1920 and 1921, making it the first public building established in the Black Forest area. This construction marked the beginning of organized community infrastructure in the remote mountain region.
The school building served the community beyond classroom hours, functioning as a church on Sundays and hosting summer Bible school for local families. This multi-purpose use reflected how central it was to the social fabric of the small mountain community.
The building sits in a quiet rural area on the outskirts of the Black Forest community and is easy to reach. Visitors should note this is a small historic structure best viewed from the outside, especially during fair weather.
From 1947 to 1977, the building was converted to a residence for a county road commission worker, during which indoor plumbing and electricity were finally installed. This unusual repurposing shows how the structure adapted to serve different needs as the community evolved.
