Crystal Valley Cemetery

Crystal Valley Cemetery is a burial ground in Manitou Springs with sections on sloped terrain bordered by green sandstone walls. The grounds include iris gardens, pathways lined with coniferous trees and silver maples, and sections organized by family plots and burial areas.

The cemetery was founded in 1882 and became the main burial ground for the town. Remains from an earlier burial ground on Pawnee Avenue were relocated here, making it the central resting place for the community.

The grounds feature Egyptian Revival architecture and Victorian monuments that reflect how people in the late 1800s wanted to remember their loved ones. The cast iron grave fences and detailed headstones show the craftsmanship and personal touches visitors notice when walking through.

The cemetery welcomes visitors during daylight hours with extended hours in summer and shorter hours in winter. Weekend visitors should contact the police department in advance to arrange access to the grounds.

One notable story is that Theresa Kenny built her own mausoleum in the 1930s and would sit in a rocking chair beside it. This unusual practice offers a glimpse into how people once prepared for their final resting places in their own way.
